AGENDA

The reluctance to discuss Organ Donation & end of life care has led to call for a ‘Revolution in Consent’ for organ donation in INDIA. We are trying to explore a common platform to encourage people to speak about organ donation and transplantation and to make their wishes known to their relatives could change the picture resulting in 93-94% of people allowing donation which will ultimately save numerous lives. We also would like to plan major conferences of religious heads on organ donation and transplantation in all regions of INDIA. At “WE WELFARE SOCIETY” as part of its responsibility, think that contributing a little today will reap benefits for generations to come as a lesson and Awareness. Awareness seems a little eased out word but has enormous strength packed in it.

RESOLUTION

RESOLUTION is to make it a REVOLUTION. Due to lack of Organ in India we lose many a lives every day hence our aim is to spread awareness about ORGAN DONATION and to make it a NATIONAL MOVE.

OVERVIEW

Organ donation is the gift of an organ to help someone who needs a transplant. But there is a shortage of organ donors and many a people die every day in INDIA while waiting for an organ transplant. People can indicate their wish to be a donor by telling a NGO/Relative/Close friend or joining the ORBO by simply filling a PLEDGE FORM. The Pledge form can be filled after gaining knowledge from the respective people who has been working on this Agenda.

DATA

India is facing an acute organ transplantation crisis: an acute Imbalance between the number of organs donated and the number of Indians waiting for an organ Donation means hundreds of Indians die needlessly awaiting an organ transplant. Cultural traditions and rigid social mindsets are difficult obstacles to overcome and paint a bleak picture for the future of organ transplantation in India.

The INDIA’s consent rate is one of the lowest in ASIA, pls. Look at the data for the same.

Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network it Says as on 2014 Jan:-

  • ♦ Number of patients who died while waiting for organ Transplants in 2010 are 6,521
  • ♦ Average number of deaths each day for patients awaiting an organ transplant:- 18

Patients waiting for: (Some patients are also waiting for multiple organs)

♦ Kidney 90,564
♦ Liver1 6,067
♦ Heart 3,113
♦ Kidney / Pancreas 2,117
♦ Lung 1,677
♦ Pancreas 1,316
♦ Intestine 274
♦ Intestine 61

Death Per Year

  • ♦ 500,000 people die because of non-availability of organs
  • ♦ 200,000 people die of liver disease
  • ♦ 50,000 people die from heart disease
  • ♦ 150,000 people await a kidney transplant but only 5,000 get one
  • ♦ 1,000,000 lakh people suffer from corneal blindness & await transplant

Nationally, with a population of 1.5 (Approximately) billion people, the statistic stands at 0.08 persons as organ donors per million population (PMP). This is an incredibly small & insignificant number compared to the statistics around the world. Countries like the USA, UK, Germany, Netherlands have a 'family consent' system for donations where people sign up as donors & their family's consent is required. These countries have seen the donations double Per Million Population averaging between 10-30 PMP. Countries like Singapore, Belgium, Spain have a more aggressive approach of 'presumed consent', which permits organ donation by default unless the donor has explicitly opposed it during his lifetime. These countries have seen the rate of donations double, averaging between 20-40 PMP.

IF WE DONATE/PLEADGE

  • ♦ In comparison to western countries only 0.05 percent Indians pledge to donate their organ with respect to around 70-80 percent in Europe and USA.
  • ♦ Surprisingly when it comes to donation Indian, women are the one donating more than men. The ratio is 20:80.
  • ♦ Each day, about 60 people around the world receive an organ transplant, while another 13 die due to non-availability of organs.

If INDIA the Donors contribute calculation

  • ♦ At 1 per million will be the donation rate: - we would have 1100 organ donors:– 2200 kidneys,1000 hearts, 1100 Livers, 2200 Eyes
  • ♦ At 3 per million Donation rate: - we would have 3300 organ donors:– 6600 kidneys,3300 hearts, 33001 Livers, 6600 Eyes
  • ♦ At 10 per million donation rate: - we would have 11,000 organ donors:- 22,000 kidneys, 11,000 hearts, 11,000 Livers, 22,000 Eyes

HINDERENCES

Indian Families due to the mythological myth they have do not allow their loved ones and Family members to participate in such noble cause. The Myth is “if any one Donates Organ then during his/her next Birth the person is deprived of from the same organ. Due to these kind of Myths and rumours we are losing lives on daily basis. Due to the lack of Pledge/Decisions/Commitment from the thousands and Lakhs of people who die every year and the subsequent decisions of family members (many of whom may be in a state of distress and quite simply not aware of the wishes of the deceased) that is the main reason behind low donation rates.

OUR TARGET & ROUTE PLAN

Since the cause is Noble hence the Target as well as the Route is also the same. We Welfare Society has aimed for 5,000 Pledge forms in 3 Months and so on as per every Quarter and have already reached 1,000 in just 20 Days of time and it is just not about the getting the forms signed it is all about spreading awareness and letting people know about the same.

As mentioned we have already started and team We Welfare Society is covering Delhi, Bhiwadi, Jaipur and Bhopal and is knocking door to door to spread awareness about the importance of Organ Donation among the public of NORTH DELHI in our first quarter (June-July-Aug). In the Future we will be spreading more knowledge by doing activities like Nukkad Natak, Stage act, Act in Corporate, Short Movies/Documentaries, Songs, and Plays in School/Colleges etc. and also will take the help of Advertisements, Social Media, Print Media and Electronic Media to spread it wide. We as a Welfare Society will make it a NATIONAL CAMPAGIN as per our resolution which aims to bring revolution seek alot of encouragement and Involvement by all of us.

LEGAL ASPECT

  • ♦ Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994
  • ♦ Selling organs in India is illegal but still some donation racket prevails. Instead, people should be encouraged to donate.
  • ♦ To stop the donation racket amendments were made to Transplantation of Human Organs Act (Thoa), 1994, which the government passed in 2008.
